Crochet Wintertime Cardigan Pattern

Have you ever finished a project, put it on for the first time completely finished, and then did not want to take it off? That was this cardigan for me.

The bulky wool yarn makes a perfect thickness for a material that is warm and comforting, but not so thick that it is uncomfortable to wear. The fit of the cardigan looks polished, but not so form fitting that it is binding anywhere. Putting it on just felt perfect for this cold Michigan winter we are finally having.

Using the category 5 bulky yarn with a size L (8.00mm) hook works up so quick. I sat down with my family to watch a movie while working on this. I was amazed how much I got done on a sweater in such a short time!

I used K+C Roving from Joanns. Some skeins and color ways were still being sold in their previous Buttercream Luxe label. I am really happy with how this yarn worked up, how it feels, and am pleasently surprised at the drape for such a thick fabric it made. Another option for the yarn is Paton’s Classic Wool Roving.

This cardigan is make top down with a round yoke. Once you have worked rows that increase down far enough to where you split for the sleeves, you then work the bottom portion of the cardigan, and then the sleeves to the bottom edgings and cuffs. Not only does this make the garment seamless, but it also lets you easily adjust the length of the sleeves and garment length.

The color work is made just like our Night Moves Sweater, where the color is changed at the beginning of the row. The stitch pattern, along with the pattern of the color changes, makes the decorative element of the yoke look more complicated than it is.

Years ago I had a cardigan with magnetic snaps instead of buttons. I loved how easy it was to snap together, and it gave a nice and clean finish to the front. Being unfamiliar with a cardigan made out of roving, I was hesitant to sew on buttons. I have had trouble in the past with them falling off from such a small area being used to sew them on. With the larger area that these magnetic snaps are sewn through I am hoping that the surface area that the yarn goes through will help them stay on longer and not pull through the roving. Another plus, no button holes to make! You can easily adjust the number of snaps for your preference.

I hope that you find this cardigan just as fun to make and as wonderful to wear as I have.
