Mama’s Got a Brand New Bag Crochet Pattern

As you all know from the Journey Bag post, I love bags. While I was making the Journey Bag the concept for this bag came to mind. I kept thinking about it, and found myself lying in bed at night thinking about how it would go together. It was then I knew it had to be made so that I could get sleep without dreaming of bags.

So, now Mama’s Got a Brand New Bag. While the bag looks like it is complicated to make since it is triangular, it really is just a rectangle that is folded on itself and strategically sewn in just 2 places. While crocheting around the edges you connect the top two points to make the strap, and the bag is complete.

While this bag isn’t that large, it can hold a lot of yarn! I had to find out just how much. After stuffing it with yarn, I was able to fit eight skeins of sock weight yarn in it. I could fit 10 skeins in it, but I think I would only use around 8 in it securely. Either way, I was quite impressed! Since I have been using the Journey Bag as my every day bag, I am thinking this will be a perfect choice for my larger project bag. It will work great for sweaters and larger items as they near completion.

Mama’s Got a Brand New Bag

Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton 2 skeins in Rose and 2 skeins in Magenta (get them here)
Crochet Hook: 4.00mm (US G)

Gauge:  
4” x 4” = 18 stitches (sc,dc repeated) x 18 rows

With Rose color chain 159.

Row 1:  Sc in second chain from hook.  Dc in the next stitch. *In the next stitch sc, dc in the following stitch.*  Repeat from * to * to end of row.

Row 2:  Chain 1.  Sc in the last st of the previous row.  Dc in the next stitch. *Sc in each dc of previous row, dc in each sc of the previous row.*  

Repeat Row 2 an additional 3 times to make a total of 5 rows.  On the 5th row, work the last dc stitch as usual until the last 2 loops of the stitch remain on the hook.  

Change working yarn color to Magenta and use it to pull the last loop up through the 2 loops on the hook and finish the stitch.  

Row 6 – 13:  Repeat Row 2 in Magenta.  Switch back to Rose color on the last dc of row 13.

Row 14 – 26:  Repeat Row 2 in Rose.  Switch back to Magenta color on the last dc of row 26.

Row 27- 47:  Repeat Row 2 in Magenta.  Switch back to Rose color on the last dc of row 47.

Row 48 – 52:  Repeat Row 2 in Rose.  

Bind off.

Block rectangle to measure 11¾ x 35⅜.

Use pins or stitch markers to section each long side of the bag in thirds.

Fold ends at opposite diagonals so corners meets the closest center third of the long edge.

Fold middle at a diagonal.

Join sections where the long bottom edges meet to create bag.  I used a zipper stitch. To do this lay sides flat. Insert hook into the top most loop on the left side, going in from the top towards the bottom.

Insert hook on the top most loop on the right side, going in from the top towards the bottom again.

Slip stitch through all three loops on the hook.

Continue working up, inserting the hook in the next loop on the left, then the next loop on the right.  Having the hook going through the right-side loop in the same direction you inserted the hook on the left feels wrong, but it is correct.

After both sides are sewn, with a slip knot on your hook slip stitch in one of the top most corners where the strap will be.  Chain 8, and then sc in the corner of the opposite side of the bag. This connects the one top side of the bag to the other.

Sc evenly around one edge of that sides opening.  When you come to the point where you seamed the panels together sc two stitches together by pulling a loop through the last stitch to be worked, then pull a loop up through the first stitch on the next side.  Pull a loop through all three loops on your hook to complete the stitch. Continue sc around the other edge of the bag until you reach the chain section. Sc one in each chain. Slip stitch in the first sc on the side.

Bind off.

With a slip knot on hook, sc in a top corner of the other edge of the bag.  Sc evenly around the sides, sc the two stitches at the bottom point together.  Sc evenly around the last side and in each of the 8 chains. Slip stitch in the beginning sc of the row.

Bind off and weave in ends.
