Crochet Ma Chere Skirt

This past spring my husband and I went on an amazing trip to the island of Guadeloupe in the French Caribbean. It is a tropical island paradise, and coming from Michigan my wardrobe was not too tropical island appropriate.

While researching the island we found out that the island tends to be more dressy than what we are used to in our little corner of the world. Casual shorts and a t-shirt definitely marks you as an American tourist. So, in addition to the few summer dresses I own, I wanted a skirt that I could wear with a tank top during the day. Something casual but appropriate, and something that would be comfortable in 90 degree sun with some wonderful tropical humidity.

I had previously used the Premier Cotton Fair yarn on my Knit Summer Breeze top and loved the feel of it, and how it washed up. So I decided to make a skirt to coordinate with it. Since the top is a simple knit dolman top, I wanted a skirt that had more design features and texture so that it would be a nice contrast. I think I accomplished that!

Even though at first glance it looks complicated, just variations of a chain stitch, single crochet, double crochet, and slip stitches are worked. It really is quite amazing what just modifying these basic stitches can really create something unique.

Each stitch and round of the pattern is discussed in the YouTube video HERE so that you will be able to create this pattern without any hesitations.

As some people are more or less concerned on the length of the skirt, there are two length options. One comes to right above the knees, and the other shows a little more leg. With sizes from XS-5X and length options, there definitely is an option for everyone.

Ma Chere translates to My Dear in French. I found this an appropriate name for this skirt pattern since this trip to a French speaking island was so special with My Dear husband, we created so many amazing memories – some while wearing my Mon Cheri skirt. Everything I relate to this skirt is just so special, it is Mon Cheri Skirt. I hope you also create such an amazing skirt, and have exciting adventures and memories in it as well.

Gauge: 16 sts and 18 rows in pattern = 4”
To measure gauge:  pattern begins with one row of fsc.  On the next row sc in each stitch of the fsc.  Make one more sc row.  Repeat Pattern Rnd 1 and 2 that are below in pattern to desired amount.  Measure repeats of repeated pattern rows to find the gauge.

A youtube video that discusses the yarn and shows how to make this pattern’s stitches and rows can be found at https://youtu.be/hhCiA4AYvCI

Abbreviations:
Fsc – foundation single crochet
St – stitch
Sl st – slip stitch
Rnd – round
Ch – chain
Sc – single crochet
Fpdc – front post double crochet

Notes:
The skirt does not open at waist.  Choose size according to largest measurement needed (either closest waist measurement or bottom measurement that is closest to hip measurement) in order to slip on over hips.  If waist is too large after blocking, a length of yarn woven through top waist band can be used as a tie on the inside.  Sewing in an elastic waist band is another option.

Skirt is not lined.  If concerned about read through you can wear a slip underneath.

When switching yarn colors, be sure to move unworked yarn to inside of skirt so that it will be on the inside of the garment until it is used again.

Fpdc counts as the stitch for the row.  Since it is worked 2 rows below, a stitch will be left unworked on the row that the sc stitches of the current row are being worked on.
