I never knew my appreciation for handmade dish washing cloths or scrubbies until after I was gifted some by a family friend.  I loved the quality feel of them, and also they had the right amount of grit without being too harsh for our dishes.  What surprised me most was that they brought just a little more joy into such a dreaded chore of mine.  A couple of years ago I also made members of my family little square scrubbies out of Red Heart Scrubby Yarn to share the love of handmade dish washing scrubbers.

Recently, my dad informed me that he broke a glass while he was washing dishes.  Little glass shards ended up in his scrubber that I gave to him. Apparently he also has become fond of handmade ones over store purchased and was dropping hints that he would like another one.  Or, maybe he just likes to use something that his daughter made for him.  Either way I needed to replace his so he could continue washing dishes with handmade dish scrubby enjoyment.

Over the summer I made the Scrubby Trio set, and we have been using them and appreciating each one differently.  I asked my husband which one he liked using the most, and an immediate response was the Waffle Scrubby because of the thickness and weight.  I like the Summer Spiral because it is easy to use either the cotton or scrubby side material when you need it, and maybe I’m just bias to it being different by being round.  The Dual Duty Scrubber is great for regular washing in prep for the dishwasher, and it is also nice with having separate areas of just cotton and a good area of scrubbing power.  So, I decided to make another set all for my dad with ideas from each of the Scrubby Trio, and to make them dish cloths which is what he used to buy.

All of these are made out of Red Heart Scrubby Cotton Yarn and Red Heart Scrubby Smoothie Yarn.  Just like with the Scrubby Trio set, I really do like the Scrubby Yarn.  It has enough grit without being too abrasive.  It also does not tear up my hands while working with it.  It does take a bit of getting used to working with since you have to adjust how hard you pull loops  through each other because of the nature of the material.  It also takes me a row or two to really get comfortable with reading the stitches. Each time when I first start using the Scrubby Yarn, particularly when worked alone, I think I will not be able to use it since I can’t see defined stitches of the previous row.  But, after looking closely and being persistent reading the stitches become easier as you go.

The Scrubby Smoothie yarn is great since the colors of the yarn available coordinate with the Scrubby yarn.  It also has a nice soft texture that makes the fabric feel not as dense as the Lion Brand 24/7 I used in the Scrubby Trio set.

I think each one of these my dad will appreciate differently, just like we have in our house with the Scrubby Trio. I hope you will also.

  1. I bet these will be your dad’s favorite gift, since they were made by you. I love the colors and how you explained the differences between your previous set of scrubbies and these. I’m anxious to get to the store and check out their scrubby yarn selection! Merry Christmas to you and your family. Looking forward to more posts from you in 2019.
