Crochet Beyond the Sea Shawl Pattern

Several years ago I made the Estrela Lace Shawl for my sister’s wedding. It is a machine knit, lacy shawl that was perfect for her to wear over her wedding dress. Over the years I have been wanting a shawl for myself.

We are outdoors quite a bit in the summer, and like to be out by the water. Here in Michigan there are plenty of warm days, but cooler nights. I wanted something that I could easily layer, be multipurpose, and still feel like summer.

I came across this staggered shell pattern and fell in love. With the edging motif to give even more details, I believe it is perfect for out by the beach or over jeans with a tank top for a casual night out.

The Pattern

The Beyond the Sea Shawl is a beginner-intermediate level pattern that features a beautiful open stitch design. I’ve included both written instructions and a chart diagram, so you can easily see how the stitches combine to form the pattern.

For this project, I used Baby Bee Sweet Delight yarn, which is a category 3 light weight yarn. Paired with an I/9 (5.5mm) hook, it creates the perfect open, airy texture that gives this shawl its lovely drape and movement. The combination with the stitch pattern really captures that “beyond the sea” feeling that inspired the design.

Who Is This Pattern For?

If you’re looking for a project that’s a step up from basic patterns but not overwhelmingly complex, this shawl is perfect! It works up relatively quickly and the result is a versatile piece you’ll reach for again and again.

The shawl shape is designed to be practical and easy to wear – no constant adjusting needed! It sits comfortably on your shoulders whether you’re dressing up for a night out or just adding a light layer for a chilly evening.

Styling Ideas

I love how versatile this shawl is! Here are a few of my favorite ways to wear it:

  • Draped simply over the shoulders with a casual dress
  • Wrapped around the neck with jeans and a tee
  • As a light layer for summer evenings
  • Folded as a scarf when you need just a touch of warmth

Pattern Notes

The Beyond the Sea Shawl works up from the bottom up for a rectangular shape. The stitch pattern creates a beautiful soft texture that showcases the yarn while maintaining a lovely lacy drape.

Blocking is recommended for this project to really open up the stitch pattern and give your shawl that professional finish.
