Machine Knit Easy Long Summer Scarf

Machine Knit Long Summer Scarf

One thing about so many things that are made from yarn is that they tend to be for cooler weather. This super easy and quick machine knit scarf is great to add a little knit softness to any outfit – even in the summer!  It can be worn like a necklace, or just draped for a light shawl.  Depending on the fiber and yarn thickness you can change what is showcased on this scarf.  I have made a light acrylic accessory that has subtle details, but these subtle details are great for projects with art yarn or when you want color work to be the main visual story.

For this scarf you only need a main bed knitting machine.  The pattern is written for a standard bed, but if you have a mid-gauge or bulky just adjust your yarn and tension to what you use for your particular machine.  The size of the scarf will be larger, but just equally as lovely.  For the subtle details you will hand transfer stitches, so a 4 multi-pronged tool is great to have.  I bought one that has 7 prongs and can be customized and it worked out great.

I started this scarf with the intent of having a lace pattern through the main portion.  However, my punch card would not advance to the next row every so often.  This would cause a mistake in the pattern, or a big tangled mess when I tried different lace cards.  So, until I could figure out what was wrong with my punch card I decided to do hand manipulated stitches.  I found a pattern online that was BEAUTIFUL, but there were too many transfers that I could not keep track where I was at and I quickly lost interest.  So, I sketched out this little pattern where you could transfer over only a few stitches in a methodical method so that you can easily tell where you were at and what you need to do next.

To note, I did fix my punch card after this scarf with the help of Ask Jack’s video on the inner workings of the Toyota 950.  You can watch it here.   I think mine was gummed up in the dial that turns the punch card and that would effect the card not advancing every so often.  Some of the spray that Jack recommends and an overnight of it sitting I tried my machine again with lace patterning.  So far so good, and I have not had to worry about it repeating a pattern row.
