Spring Flower Scrubby

One thing I love about crochet, how easy it is to add a fun and joyous spin to one of my most dreaded chores – dishes.

Several years ago I started making my own dish scrubbies, and I haven’t turned back. I love how fun they are to make, how easy they are to make, and how much personality they bring to my kitchen. They also make wonderful gifts. I always see one of my scrubbies at my Dad’s kitchen sink, so he finds them just as wonderful at cleaning dishes as I do.

With this pattern you can choose how much scrubby texture you prefer to crochet with, or none at all. The scrubby yarn does make it more difficult to see your stitches, but the effort is so very much worth the effort – at least in my opinion.

Crochet Half Log Cabin Dish Scrubby

Back in 2021 I posted the Crochet Quilter’s Dish Scrubby pattern, and since then I have absolutely loved using it. For me it is the perfect size for washing dishes, and I have been impressed with how well the yarns have held up to all the wear and tear. Not to mention the bright colors always makes me smile when I pick it up to do the dreaded and never ending dish washing.

Now, after two and a half years, I have been inspired to make another one based off of it. On the previous pattern I made four half log cabin blocks, and then joined them together. This pattern is just one larger block all on its own to give maximum scrubby material on two edges. A perfect edge to easily scrub off burnt or dried on food from pots and dishes.

Crochet Heart Scrubby

This pattern has taken me too long to make. Not that actually crocheting it took that long, took me about 20 minutes for the YouTube Tutorial – and that was with all the talking! No, getting in my head how to make this pattern took so long. Years long.

After publishing my first dish scrubby trio pattern collection a lady reached out to me asking where the heart pattern was. I had to really figure out what she was referring to since there was a round pattern, and two square ones. I finally determined it was from looking at one of the images of a square one draped over a pot that she perceived it to be a heart shape. These dish scrubbies were published in 2018. From her reaching out I began thinking of making a heart shaped scrubby. So, it took years.

Crochet Quilter’s Dish Scrubby

My mom is a quilter. My aunt is a quilter. I have wonderful quilts from my ancestors I have never met. Yet, I am not a quilter.

I can sew, and have made some of my own clothes. However, I do not quilt. The meticulous amount of measuring and making sure everything is square does not come across as relaxing to me, and if it brings more stress into my life I try to avoid it if at all possible. How crochet and knitting is less stressful I’m not sure. Perhaps I learned when things were calmer in my life, and now the “stressful” bits I just know how to get through better.

Crochet Quick Gift Scrubby

Free Pattern Crochet Quick Gift Scrubby by www.CityFarmhouseStudio.com

Can you believe it is 5 months until Christmas!!! With the heat wave that many of us in the US have been going through, it is hard to start thinking about Christmas being less than half a year away.

At Christmas I usually have the great idea to make handmade gifts for many people on our Christmas list, but then time runs out on me. It is the weekend before Christmas and only half of my gift list is filled. Not this year! A friend has been doing a Christmas in July Make-A-Long with other designers. 31 days of free Christmas gift patterns that will be shared this month will make my list of names for a gift for be completed earlier this year.

Crochet Dish Cloth Trio

Across the Land, By the Ocean, and Open Air Dish Cloth

I never knew my appreciation for handmade dish washing cloths or scrubbies until after I was gifted some by a family friend.  I loved the quality feel of them, and also they had the right amount of grit without being too harsh for our dishes.  What surprised me most was that they brought just a little more joy into such a dreaded chore of mine.  A couple of years ago I also made members of my family little square scrubbies out of Red Heart Scrubby Yarn to share the love of handmade dish washing scrubbers.

Recently, my dad informed me that he broke a glass while he was washing dishes.  Little glass shards ended up in his scrubber that I gave to him. Apparently he also has become fond of handmade ones over store purchased and was dropping hints that he would like another one.  Or, maybe he just likes to use something that his daughter made for him.  Either way I needed to replace his so he could continue washing dishes with handmade dish scrubby enjoyment.

Waffle Scrubby Crochet Pattern

Waffle Scrubber a free crochet pattern by www.CityFarmhouseStudio.com

In addition to the Dual Duty Scrubber and the Summer Spiral Scrubby here is the Waffle Scrubby crochet pattern.  When I still had yarn left after making the two previous scrubbies, I just kept going and made another new one since I had another idea.

This time I combined both yarns together to create a thicker and heavier scrubby.  Since I upped the weight of the yarn by combining the two I also increased the hook size by 3 letters.  Going from a H to a K hook.  This gives a nice heavy fabric, but it isn’t too stiff to be unmanageable. Summer Spiral Scrubby Crochet Pattern

Summer Spiral Scrubber a free crochet pattern by www.CityFarmhouseStudio.com

If you have read the blog post about my Dual Duty Scrubber here,  you know that I am in the process of making our household more dish cloths.  Instead of going out to purchase them I decided to make them (what is a better excuse to buy yarn!).

Of course, as a designer I couldn’t just stick to one pattern.  I had to get creative.  I had this idea of using the two different textures of yarn that I used in the Dual Duty in a spiraling pattern.  To create this unique pattern and texture you work each yarn for only a portion of a round, switching back and forth between the yarns you are using.  By switching back and forth between the yarns you create the spiraling pattern.
