Crochet Quick Gift Scrubby

Can you believe it is 5 months until Christmas!!! With the heat wave that many of us in the US have been going through, it is hard to start thinking about Christmas being less than half a year away.

At Christmas I usually have the great idea to make handmade gifts for many people on our Christmas list, but then time runs out on me. It is the weekend before Christmas and only half of my gift list is filled. Not this year! A friend has been doing a Christmas in July Make-A-Long with other designers. 31 days of free Christmas gift patterns that will be shared this month will make my list of names for a gift for be completed earlier this year.

This scrubby pattern will be included on this week’s roundup! The idea for my Quick Gift Scrubby actually came to me earlier this spring when Teacher Appreciation Week quickly came upon me. Looking through my stash and having some left over scrubby yarn I decided to make scrubbies for each of the teachers, and share some of my love for handmade dish washing gear.

After using my other scrubbies in the kitchen, and hearing some comments from my dad about the dishcloths I made him, I came up with this quick to memorize and quick to make scrubby.

The scrubby is made with both strands of Red Heart Scrubby Smoothie Yarn (find it here) and Red Heart Scrubby Yarn (find it here) held together. This gives a nice and thick scrubby texture that isn’t too thick to feel the bumps of dried on food you still need to get off. Crocheting with the two strands takes a few rows to get used to. The textured yarn makes it hard to read stitches, but as you work the pattern the stitches become easier to read.

The rectangle size is just right for being able to hold, but not too much material that it gets heavy and hard to work with. Also, it fits nicely on the corner of the sink to dry.

The loop on one corner makes it easy to hang up to dry if you have a hook on an under the sink storage caddy.

Not only is this great for doing dishes, but I have been using one in the shower as an exfoliator. The scrubby is aggressive enough to scrub the skin but not too aggressive that it feels like you are using sand paper.

So far I have made over 6 and still have plenty of yarn left. Each one now takes me around 15-20 min to make. Take one and pair it up with a nice dish towel and you have a great gift set. Or, if you know how to make some body products, pair the scrubby with some hand made soap and body butter.

I hope you enjoy making this quick scrubby and easily fill your gift list up in plenty of time to enjoy the holidays.
